Gold Shoe Culminating Event

  • 08 Jun 2019
  • 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
  • Tanglewood Nature Center

Chemung County residents can get moving and win great prizes during the annual Gold Shoe Step It Up Challenge. Between May 1st and June 7th residents can look for nearly 400 painted gold shoes which have been hidden at local parks and trails throughout the County. Walkers who find the shoes will be eligible to win great prizes at the end event on June 8th at 10 am at the Tanglewood Nature Center. Prizes include Greek Peak passes, an Empire Pass, athletic gear, balls, bicycles, skating passes, fitness trackers, swim passes, and many more.

Participants are encouraged to register and take an online health assessment. All who do will receive an extra prize ticket at the June 8th event. Residents can also earn an extra ticket by participating in health screenings provided by Arnot Health on June 8th. This means you can win prizes whether you find a shoe or not! Weekly walks at local area parks will be scheduled and participants will be urged to post pictures on the Gold Shoe Step It Up Challenge Facebook page. Shoes will be hidden at 13 local sites:

  • Tanglewood Nature Center
  • Big Flats Community Park
  • Sperr Park
  • Katy Leary Park
  • Boat Launches in Chemung County
  • Park Station
  • Holding Point, Horseheads
  • Sullivan Park, Thorne St. Horseheads
  • Chapel Park, Southport

The Gold Shoe Step It Up Challenge is designed to improve overall health through a focus on better nutrition and increased physical activity at these local recreational areas. Chemung County has higher rates of obesity for both adults and adolescents than New York State. Our heart attack, cerebrovascular disease, hypertension, and diabetes hospitalization rates are all higher than NYS rates. Residents can go to www.chemungcountyhealth.org or click here https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/gsppp2019 to register.
